My father has an ileostomy, he also has picks desease and aphasia.
He has no idea that he has an ileostomy. We choose disposable bags for this reason. He is now in a nursing home, they do not know how to properly care for my Dads stoma. How to change the flange properly or clean the area around the stoma.
He is often badly dehydrated when I go to see him. When I bring this to the nurses attention they say he is getting enough fluid. Just tonight when I was trying to calm him down he drank 60 ounces of water. Because he cannot speak he strikes out and acts completely off the wall towards the nurses. He struck one of the nurses when he was in this dehydrated state.

What can we do, to get better help in the nursing home?

The only suggestion I can give is to contact your physician, city or county
social services to see if they can help. Check with the hospital where your Father had the surgery for assistance. Also contact your Enterostomal Therapy nurse at the hospital to get help with the stoma care.
Perhaps you need to find a different facility.

Good Luck. God Bless.

i am having an iliostomy on aug 2. this tuesday. I cant decide whether to have the ostomy down low just above my beltline where I could have the bag and its contents sit in my shorts. or up higher on my abdomen. If it were lower I might be able to hide it under a bathing suit but dont knowif its practical and would stick as well as the area is curved. any input you could give me would be helpful. What would be the most important issue when choosing the proper spot.? please e-mail me at marky101@aol.com with any comments or suggestions. The ostomy nurse has made several suggestions but I would like to hear from you all. I am an active male.age 56
than you mark
