When the adhesive on the Osto-EZ-Vent does not adhere properly to the pouch it can be due to the coating applied to the surface of the pouch. This coating is a release agent, which keeps the pouches from developing static and keeps “plastic noise” down. From time to time when this coating is applied more heavily during manufacturing, (manufacturers have a plus or minus factor of 10%), additional rubbing will be needed to work through the coating. KEM uses a special adhesive made by 3M, which has a very high bonding capability. 3M recommends all surfaces be cleaned thoroughly prior to attaching their adhesives. The adhesive was tested on all major pouches.

It is recommended using bottled isopropyl alcohol and cotton to rub the surface until the shine is removed from the pouch, remove residue. This shine is the coating. The surface of the pouch will be dull when the coating is removed. Then place the vent on to the cleaned surface, pressing the vent firmly around the entire base. Allow at least 24 hrs. bonding time.

KEM recommends a tug test prior to making the hole in the pouch to ensure a secure bond. See Step 5 on the "How to Attach" page of the KEM website.

My brother in law has a stoma for five months now and often experiences pain, because accumulation of gas in the last segment of the the colon connected to the stoma, which is his case, is the ileum.

He has not yet learnt how to facilitate the passing of gas through the last part and to expele or release it easily.

I am writing on his behalf because of language

Any advice on this would be thankfully appreciated

Pedro

Dear Pedro:

I would suggest contacting the doctor that performed the surgery, or the Enterostomal Therapy Nurse at the facility where your brother had his surgery.
